The New XC90: A Modern Icon, Reimagined for an Electric Age

• New exterior styling and user interface to bring Volvo Cars’ popular flagship SUV closer to the marque’s fully electric models

• Two top-spec Ultra variants offered with choice of T8 plug-in hybrid or B5 mild hybrid powertrains, with recommended retail prices from RM418,888¹

A New Modern Icon

The new exterior design represents the first major facelift for the current generation XC90 model. A new front air intake graphic, slimmed-down headlights, sculpted hood and updated front bumper and fenders provide a contemporary, dynamic upgrade to a timeless and uniquely Scandinavian design.

The refreshed interior comes with a redesigned front cabin. The new XC90’s dashboard has a more horizontal shape than before and incorporates decorative panels made from premium materials for a more textured finish, split by new vertical air vents. Enhanced illumination contributes to a more luxurious feel at night.

The cabin has been redesigned to be more practical with an additional cupholder and storage space in the centre console, while the wireless phone charger is now separated from the main storage area for more convenience.

Intuitive, Seamless User Interface

The other big change is in the inside of the new XC90 – a larger, free-standing 11.2-inch central screen with improved pixel density by 21 percent for a sharper resolution.

The central screen allows drivers to access Volvo Cars’ next-generation user interface shared with its fully electric flagship counterpart – the Volvo EX90. The larger screen allows the most common apps and controls, such as maps, media and connectivity to be displayed on the same screen, meaning fewer taps to get to the features drivers most often use.

The new user interface is also intuitive, with a contextual bar that learns drivers’ habits and presents the most useful apps according to the situation, such as showing the icon for the 360-degree camera when driving at low speeds or your favourite media streaming app when stopped and charging.

For the XC90 Ultra T8 specifically, the new interface also allows an easier transition between electric, combustion, or hybrid power with the addition of “Drive Modes” on the home screen. There, drivers can easily access “Pure”, “Hybrid”, and “Performance” modes among others with just a tap.

Under the hood, the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain has 77 kilometres of fully electric range on under the WLTP testing cycle², meaning owners can do most of their daily commutes with zero tailpipe emissions. Volvo Cars’ global data shows that around half of the distance covered by the latest plug-in hybrid Volvo cars is driven on pure electric power³.

For longer trips, the hybrid powertrain is paired with an efficient petrol engine to extend range by more than 800 km°, and owners can opt for the full combined power of petrol and electric for constant all-wheel drive or off-road driving.

The B5 mild hybrid variant is assisted by a 48v lithium-ion battery and an integrated starter/generator which can help reduce emissions and fuel consumption by up to 15 percent in real-world driving. The B5 powertrain has also been upgraded for a more efficient engine combustion cycle with CO2 emission reductions and fuel economy improvements of up to 2 percent based on the WLTP cycle².

Legendary Comfort as Standard

The new XC90’s class-leading ride comfort is underpinned by its active chassis with air suspension on all four wheels, providing self-levelling functionality and constant ride height adjustment by monitoring the car, road and driver 500 times per second to give the most comfortable ride possible.

The air suspension can lower itself by 20mm for more aerodynamic efficiency and stability at speed or raise itself by 40mm for off-road driving. Additionally, the electronically controlled damping system continuously monitors and adjusts to road conditions, helping ensure a smooth ride and a dynamic driving experience.

The new XC90 also features improved sound insulation with acoustic foam-filled pillars and a new frequency selective damping system for even less wind and road noise. This is an ideal setting for the Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system that can replicate the acoustics of a stage, a jazz club, or Gothenburg’s famed concert hall through 19 speakers located throughout the cabin. The audio system features the company’s proprietary Nautilus™ and Continuum™ speaker technologies, tuned for a clear, balanced listening experience with Dirac Unison™ Tuning.
